Rhode Island in 7 numbers
- Every major offense fell in 2025. Robbery -23% (511 to 393), motor vehicle theft -16%, homicide -16%, larceny-theft -13%, aggravated assault -7%, burglary -6%.
- Almost half of all reports are property crime. 23,226 of 54,910 reports (42.3%); larceny-theft alone is 15,024 (27.4%).
- Clearances skew toward violent crime. 55% of aggravated assaults cleared vs 15% of motor vehicle thefts and 21% of larcenies (2025, reports cleared divided by reports received, reporting agencies only).
- Homicides fell by nearly a fifth. 38 reports in 2025 vs 45 in 2024 (-16%) across reporting agencies.
- The biggest volume is not violent. Simple assault (12,827) alone outweighs the entire personal-safety total (3,115, 5.7% of reports).
- Watch the monthly shape. Larceny-theft peaked in May (1,390) and troughed in Jan (1,087), a 1.3× swing inside a single year.
- These are reporting-agency sums. 29 of 40 agencies reported robbery in December 2025 (vs 30 in January); totals reflect who reported, not a census of crime.
Takeaways are computed from summed FBI CDE reported counts (source year 2025, 40 agencies in file). They describe reported data, not forecasts; check the methodology and coverage notes before reuse.
